Oh, it’s happening again! Just when we thought Jason Day couldn’t steal the spotlight, he’s back in it. Surprisingly, this time it’s not because of his eccentric outfits. Instead, fans are questioning whether he was the right choice to represent Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite shooting 69 and 68 in the first two days of competition at Le Golf National, he still managed to attract negative attention, even when the focus wasn’t on him.
Bringing up the topic of Australian representation at the Olympics, @ProolfCritic posted on X: “Has Min Woo Lee done anything noteworthy on the @PGATOUR in 2024? But of course, that’s a rhetorical question.” The post also mentioned that although Lee didn’t perform as well as expected on the greens, his Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) had improved. After earning a special temporary membership for the PGA Tour in 2023, Lee started the season ranked 37th in the OWGR. Contrary to what the post implied, he has had some impressive performances to be proud of.
Lee didn’t have the greatest start to 2024, finishing at T21, T43, and T71 in the first three tournaments. This dropped his ranking to 41st, but then came a turning point: the Cognizant Classic, where he achieved an outstanding T2, propelling him from 41st to 31st in the OWGR. However, he experienced a series of underwhelming performances again, causing him to drop back to 36th. But then came another highlight of his season – a T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which took him back to 31st. Unfortunately, after missing the cut at the Open Championship, where Jason Day finished at T13, Lee was 36th in the rankings before the Olympics.
Considering that he’s still adjusting to the PGA Tour, it’s understandable why there have been fluctuations in his rankings. As for Jason Day, who has been a consistent player on the PGA Tour since turning professional in July 2006, his ranking dropped from 19th at the beginning of the year to 31st before the Olympics. However, this wasn’t the reason why the 36-year-old received criticism.
